Our Guest Speaker was Dean Tokishi from the Kaho'olawe Island Reserve
Commission. The Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC) was created
in the early 1990's to manage the Kaho'olawe Island Reserve while it is
held in trust for a future Native Hawaiian sovereign entity. Dean's
efforts focus on improving the health of the offshore areas and ocean
resources within the 2 miles of ocean surrounding Kaho'olawe.
Dean shared with us Kaho'olawe history/background and gave us a brief
PowerPoint tour of the island's coasts. Dean also provided the club
with a description of the numerous programs and efforts KIRC's Ocean
Resources Management Program currently focuses on which include, but are
not limited to, coral reef surveying, fish tagging and other various
species monitoring (e.g. seals, honu, seabirds, etc).
If you have any questions please contact the KIRC at 243-5020 or by
email at administrator@kirc.hawaii.gov . The commission's website is
http://kahoolawe.hawaii.gov/.
Please make plans to attend our next club meeting tomorrow on March 11th

From the Blood Bank:
Thank you in advance for supporting your community blood center, where one donation can save up to 3 lives.
Every day in Hawaii, hundreds of patients count on volunteer blood donors for their very survival. Typical uses for the donated blood include surgical procedures, treatment of accident victims, ulcers, anemia, mothers and newborns during delivery, and cancer therapy.
Because each donation is separated into three different components — red blood cells, platelets and plasma — a single donation can help save the lives of up to three people.
The donation process is safe and usually takes about an hour. There is some paper work, a confidential interview and a mini-physical, but the actual collection of blood takes only five to eight minutes.
In Hawaii, only 2 percent of the eligible population donates blood. More donors are always needed. The requirements to be a blood donor are simple:
Be in good health
Be 18 years of age or older (17 with signed Blood Bank parent/legal guardian consent form)
Weigh 110 pounds or more
Bring a valid photo ID with date of birth
To make an appointment or get more information, visit www.bbh.org or call the Blood Bank of Hawaii at 1-800-372-9966. You can also follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/hawaiibloodbank.
60 % of us are eligible to donate.
60% of us will need blood in our life time, but only 2% donate.
